Grab the ice cube trays! You’ve got to make this Spider Ice Halloween Activity.
One night, I tossed a bunch of plastic spiders into an ice cube tray and filled it up with water. I left my little ice cubes in the freezer and walked away – completely forgetting I had a spider ice Halloween activity waiting…
Three weeks later, I remembered and thank goodness for Past Susie – that angel of a woman saved my Monday.

How spider ice cubes saved my Monday
My 4-year-old was have a case of the Mondays. Things just weren’t going well for him and there was nothing I could do.
His mood was stuck.
His play was gone.
He needed help.
Suddenly, a light bulb went off and I remembered the spider ice cubes I’d made three weeks earlier. THANK YOU PAST SUSIE.

This activity reset his whole day!
Activities are such a great tool. Activities are the best reset button. Activities can save a day.
I grabbed the spider ice cubes from the freezer, cracked them into a storage container, added some water… and there it was!

The ins and outs of a spider ice cube activity:
- Set plastic spiders or plastic spider rings into the slots of an ice cube tray.
- Add colored water over the top (I did purple and orange).
- Freeze.
It’s just that easy.
- Add the ice cubes into a sensory bin (storage container)
- Put two bowls of warm water
- Add kitchen tools (cups, eye droppers, scoops)
This. Was. The. Best.

This was the ultimate Halloween science bin
For my son, this became about melting the ice cubes, experimenting with color disbursement, mixing colors, etc.
It was (to quote him): “EPIC!”

Eventually, he asked for salt to use in his melting process. I have no idea where he got the idea to try salt for melting, but he did and he insisted.
“I need salt! I need to try salt.”
I was 100% about adding the salt – because why not? Let him have a science moment.

What shocked me: how long this lasted
This was a 45 minute activity. FORTY FIVE MINUTES. 45 minutes from a child having a rough morning, frustrated with his life, and not doing well.
Forty five minutes to change his entire morning and make a huge impact in his life.
How? With some spiders in some ice cubes in a plastic container. This wasn’t much, but it was just right.
